Open Athena is a nonprofit that partners with academic labs building large AI models to solve their technology challenges so they can focus on doing science. Our interdisciplinary work supports projects in fields like climate science, chemistry, genomics, and materials research, making large-scale models accessible and impactful.
Role Overview
We’re looking for a New York City based Marketing & Communications Specialist to amplify our message, engage our core audiences (engineers and academic researchers), and promote our impact. You’ll be responsible for content creation, managing social media, growing our audience, and coordinating events. You’ll work closely with our leadership and engineering teams to translate complex technical topics into compelling narratives. Success in this role requires strong writing skills, technical fluency, creativity, and proactive collaboration with interdisciplinary teams.
Key Responsibilities
Content Creation & Social Media Management: Produce engaging written, audio, and video content tailored to technical audiences, including updates on scientific foundation model projects, technical comparisons (e.g., PyTorch vs. JAX), and partner highlights.
Mailing List Administration: Curate and manage communications for our community, growing audience engagement through targeted newsletters and updates.
Outreach Materials: Develop concise, consistent, and compelling materials that support outreach efforts and clearly communicate our mission and impact.
Event Coordination: Help plan, organize, and promote occasional events, including webinars, funder gatherings, and community meetups.
Ideal Candidate Profile
You’re a strong communicator and creative storyteller with experience engaging technical audiences. You have excellent organizational skills, thrive working independently, and enjoy translating complex concepts into clear, compelling content. You’re proactive, detail-oriented, and driven by making an impact through clear, impact-focused messaging.
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience in Marketing, Communications, Journalism, or a related field
3+ years of experience in various marketing functions including brand management, content creation, and social media management (especially LinkedIn)
Experience marketing to sophisticated scientific and academic audiences, translating complex concepts (e.g., AI/ML, computational tools) into clear, compelling narratives
Hands-on event coordination experience for virtual and in-person events (webinars, funder gatherings, community meetups), including promotion, logistics, and post-event follow-up
Strong organizational skills and comfort working with interdisciplinary teams across multiple projects in a fast-paced, mission-driven environment
Compensation: $90–$150 per hour, commensurate with experience and scope of work.
