Fractional CFO (Contract, Freelance)
We are seeking an experienced Fractional CFO who understands nonprofit finance inside and out — from compliance to forecasting — and can serve as a trusted partner to leadership and our board.

Role Overview
The Fractional CFO will provide strategic financial oversight, ensure regulatory compliance, and guide Sound Future toward long-term financial sustainability. You will work closely with the CEO, COO, and Board Finance Committee to keep financial systems clean, audit-ready, and aligned with best practices for growing nonprofits.
This position is ideal for a seasoned nonprofit finance professional who enjoys working with small but ambitious organizations and is willing to roll up their sleeves.
Key Responsibilities
Compliance & Risk Management: Ensure 501(c)(3) compliance, GAAP adherence, and timely 990 filings; support annual audit or financial review.
Accounting Oversight: Supervise bookkeeping, payroll, AP/AR, and monthly reconciliations (not necessarily performing these tasks directly, but ensuring they’re done correctly).
Grant & Donor Tracking: Develop and maintain systems for restricted/unrestricted fund tracking and grant reporting.
Board & Leadership Support: Present financials to the board in a clear, strategic format and provide recommendations on risk management and cash flow.
Financial Strategy & Forecasting: Build budgets and multi-year projections aligned with Sound Future’s goals; provide scenario planning and actionable insights.
System Improvements: Help streamline financial tools and workflows, integrating with CRM as needed.
Qualifications
Experience:
5+ years in nonprofit finance leadership roles
Knowledge:
Expert understanding of nonprofit compliance, GAAP, and fund accounting.
Skills:
Strong financial modeling and forecasting ability.
Excellent communication — able to explain complex financials to non-finance audiences.
Familiarity with nonprofit accounting software (e.g., QuickBooks Online, Sage Intacct).
Mindset:
Strategic and detail-oriented.
