Communications & Growth Lead (Part-Time)

Location: Remote
Hours: Up to 20 hours per week
Compensation: $25/hour (approximately $2,000/month)
Reports to: Director of Programs & Organizational Leadership

About Barrier Breakers®

Barrier Breakers® is a national nonprofit that helps first-generation and underserved students access and succeed in college and graduate school. Through advising, mentorship, and national conferences such as Break Into College and Break Into Law, we provide students with the roadmap, mentorship, and support they need to pursue high-impact careers.

As our organization grows, we are seeking a Communications & Growth Lead who will help build consistent communication systems that expand our reach, increase student enrollment, strengthen donor engagement, and support our national conference initiatives.

Position Overview

The Communications & Growth Lead will own and manage Barrier Breakers’ communication cadence across multiple audiences, including students, families, donors, and conference attendees.

This role focuses on communication strategy that drives growth, particularly through:

  • Email marketing and list growth

  • Audience segmentation and communication funnels

  • Conference communication campaigns

  • Social media alignment with email and marketing initiatives

The ideal candidate is both strategic and execution-oriented — someone who can manage systems, improve communication consistency, and ensure that messaging across email, social media, and content channels supports the organization’s growth goals.

This role is designed to reduce founder bottlenecks and establish sustainable communication systems as the organization continues to scale.

Because Barrier Breakers supports students pursuing college and graduate education, the ideal candidate will be comfortable communicating about college admissions, law school preparation, and related educational pathways.

Key Responsibilities

Email Marketing & Communication Strategy

Manage and execute the organization’s email communication cadence across several core audiences.

This includes:

  • Weekly law school advising marketing emails

  • Biweekly college counseling marketing emails

  • Biweekly donor engagement emails

  • Conference communication campaigns

Responsibilities include:

  • Writing and scheduling emails

  • Building and managing an email calendar

  • Segmenting email audiences appropriately

  • Coordinating graphics and messaging

  • Tracking open rates, click-through rates, and engagement metrics

  • Continuously improving email performance and communication consistency

  • The Communications & Growth Lead will work closely with the Director of Student Success & Organizational Leadership to ensure messaging accurately reflects Barrier Breakers’ advising philosophy and programs.

The goal is to establish predictable, effective email communication systems that support enrollment, engagement, and revenue growth.

Email List Growth & Funnel Development

Support the growth of Barrier Breakers’ email ecosystem by building communication funnels that convert new subscribers into engaged participants.

Responsibilities include:

  • Managing ConvertKit sequences and email funnels

  • Building nurture sequences tied to free resources and downloads

  • Coordinating with the social media team to launch lead magnets and grow the email list

  • Ensuring that free resources lead naturally into program awareness and enrollment opportunities

Graphics and free resources will be produced by our in-house Graphic Designer, but this role manages the communication strategy and sequencing behind those resources.

Social Media & Channel Alignment

Oversee communication strategy and alignment across Barrier Breakers’ social media channels in coordination with the social media manager.

Barrier Breakers currently maintains multiple social media channels to support our college counseling, law school advising, and donor-nurturing goals.

This role will not be responsible for creating social media graphics or posts, but will ensure strategic coordination between social media messaging and email campaigns.

Responsibilities include:

  • Reviewing and approving social media content plans created by our in-house Graphic Designer

  • Ensuring alignment between social media posts and email campaigns

  • Coordinating messaging across platforms when launching conferences, programs, or initiatives

  • Identifying opportunities for social media to support email list growth

  • Ensuring consistent messaging across email, social media, and content channels

The goal is to move from reactive posting to a coordinated communication strategy that supports organizational growth.

Content & Communication Coordination

Coordinate with team members (podcast/youtube editors, podcast host, and graphic designer) responsible for content creation, including:

  • Social media

  • Podcast and YouTube content

  • Graphic design support

Responsibilities include:

  • Maintaining a master communications calendar across email, social media, and conferences

  • Ensuring messaging consistency across platforms

  • Supporting promotional messaging for major initiatives

  • Helping ensure communication execution stays on schedule

Qualifications

We are looking for someone who is:

  • Highly organized and systems-oriented

  • A strong writer with experience in email communication

  • Comfortable using email marketing platforms (especially ConvertKit or similar tools)

  • Interested in growth strategy and audience engagement

  • Comfortable managing multiple communication streams simultaneously

  • Able to work independently in a fast-paced environment

Preferred experience includes:

  • Experience working in education, college access, advising, admissions consulting, or related student-facing programs

  • Familiarity with the college admissions or law school admissions landscape

  • Experience writing communications for student or parent audiences

  • Email marketing or communications roles

  • Audience segmentation and marketing funnels

  • Work in education, nonprofit, or mission-driven organizations

  • Conference or event communication campaigns

Compensation & Structure

This role is part-time, up to 20 hours per week, at $25/hour (approximately $2,000/month).

The position will begin with a 90-day pilot period (or through the current conference cycle) to ensure alignment with organizational capacity and revenue sustainability.

Our goal is to build a long-term communications function, and we are seeking someone interested in growing with the organization as our programs expand.

Why This Role Matters

Barrier Breakers has strong programming and national reach, but our communication systems need consistent ownership to fully realize our impact.

This role directly supports:

  • Increased conference registrations

  • Growth in college and graduate school program enrollment

  • Stronger donor engagement

  • Sustainable organizational growth

For someone excited about education access, communications strategy, and mission-driven growth, this role offers the opportunity to help shape how a growing national nonprofit connects with its audience.
