Accountant (Part-Time)

The Institute for International Law and Human Rights (IILHR) seeks an Accountant to manage financial reporting and compliance. IILHR is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization registered in Washington, DC; Brussels, Belgium; Baghdad, Iraq and the Kurdistan Region of Iraq. IILHR helps transitioning states develop the capacity to strengthen democratic values and build respect for human rights. This is a fully remote position with a low monthly time commitment, perfect for professionals seeking additional income or those passionate about nonprofit work. Must be available for virtual calls and emails during EST working hours Monday – Friday.

Key Responsibilities

In coordination with the Executive Director and Program Manager:

  • Prepare quarterly financial reports for U.S. federal and other donor-funded grants.

  • Develop audit schedules, compile required financial documentation and ensure timely

  • submission of reports to federal agencies and other donors.

  • Maintain nonprofit bookkeeping and ensure compliance with IRS regulations and donor

  • requirements.

  • Support financial reporting for international programs and grant-funded activities abroad.

  • Oversee payroll processing and manage all related tax filings.

  • Assist in the preparation, tracking, and monitoring of organizational and project budgets.

  • Present the Annual Financial Report to the Board of Directors

Qualifications

  • Minimum of 5 years’ experience in nonprofit accounting and U.S. federal grant financial reporting.

  • Legal authorization to work in the United States.

  • Strong proficiency in QuickBooks Online and fund-accounting principles.

  • Advanced skills in Microsoft Excel.

  • Demonstrated experience with payroll processing and tax compliance.

  • Experience preparing for internal and external financial audits.

  • Proven ability to develop, manage, and monitor budgets.

  • Excellent attention to detail, strong organizational abilities, and capacity to work

  • independently and communicate clearly.

  • Experience working with international projects and donor-compliance requirements.

  • Native-level English proficiency.

Position Details

  • Start Date: First week of January

  • Schedule: Remote (with availability M-F during EST working hours), approximately 8 hours/month (~100 hours/year)

  • Compensation: Hourly rate, commensurate with experience
