Policy & Organizing Strategist (Contract, Freelance)
About the Role
We’re hiring a Policy and Organizing Strategist—part policy expert, part organizer, with an eye toward digital marketing/advocacy and communications. Your focus will be the east coast primarily, focused on Virginia and North Carolina.
What You’ll Do
Organizing Strategy (60%)
Develop and implement a systematic, data-driven approach to tracking campaign progress to ensure greatest impact
Organize digitally and in-field to implement strategies developed in collaboration with the National Campaigns Director
Identify 20-30 high-impact small business owner advocates for membership in key east coast states (we are looking for a quality over quantity approach)
Support C4 and PAC engagements with candidates for Governor and State Legislature, in collaboration with the Campaigns Director
Conduct 1 on 1s with local small business owners. Help coordinate 1,000 Main Streets convenings with local champions
Policy Direction (20%)
Coordinate with the National Campaigns Director on identifying policy that will impact our members
Track pertinent policy in the states and in Congress
Substack and Communications (20%)
Oversee MSA’s The Write Off Substack newsletter
Assist with digital campaign launches, email blasts, press quotes, and rapid-response moments
Coordinate with comms and organizing teams to align content with campaign goals
Regularly scan local and national media for small business owners featured in the news
Work with organizing staff to plug in new members to campaigns and storytelling
Who You Are
Deep political and policy knowledge for both federal and state-level (specifically VA)
Media savvy and some degree of experience pitching and developing media content
Deeply curious about small business, economic justice, and the real-life impact of policy
Organized, deadline-driven, and able to juggle creative content and relationship-building with ease
