How We Work
We use an Orton Gillingham-based, structured-literacy approach to working with students to build word recognition, fluency, and overall comprehension skills.
Teaching Fellows complete our structured literacy program that is IDA-accredited and includes diagnostic, explicit, systematic, and cumulative courses that help unlock each child's deep reading brain through a culturally and linguistically preserving lens.
Passing this final, comprehensive exam and obtaining the program certificate allows Teaching Fellows to sit for the KPEERI exam and, upon successful completion of the KPEERI, apply for the Structured Literacy Classroom Teacher (SLCT) Knowledge Certificate through CERI.
We use Dibels Oral Reading Fluency and an Informal Decoding Inventory (STAR Phonics) to understand student strengths and opportunities in reading. We design individual learning plans based on that data.
Students meet with teaching fellows online via Google Meet 3 times a week for 20-30 minutes, accessed via our online platform
We use a Virtual Professional Learning Community model to build familiarity with Joy Education digital curriculum via practice.
Students work with consistent teaching fellows, after school (3p-8:30p EDT) during homework help or rotation blocks for 12 weeks at a time (M-TH)
We prioritize relationships and use a culturally responsive, identity-centered approach to build student confidence in reading and love of learning.
We keep track of student engagement and growth in fluency. We share that data with families, schools, and community partners
We provide our digital curriculum for free to families for extra practice at home
