Summary
Purpose Capital is seeking an experienced (Part-time) Finance Director of Non Profit/Charter Schools to serve as a strategic partner and operations leader, reporting directly to the CEO. The Finance Director will oversee finance, bookkeeping, payroll, and federal grant management, while leading a team of contractors with an emphasis on quality, accuracy, and meeting deadlines.
This role requires a utility player who is familiar with all aspects of non-profit financial services. The ideal candidate has a strong track record of leadership in nonprofit and/or charter school finance, deep experience with finance, grants, and compliance, and the ability to communicate complex financials in clear, actionable terms to internal and external stakeholders. This is a part-time W-2 role (20–30 hours per week) with a predictable schedule during standard business hours (9 AM – 5 PM EST).
Role & Responsibilities
Leadership & Operations (50%)
Provide oversight of all financial functions, serving as both subject matter expert and accessible leader.
Allocate and monitor work strategically, ensuring deliverables are completed with accuracy and within established deadlines.
Set expectations, monitor performance, and ensure accountability across functions.
Conduct regular team meetings and 1:1 sessions to review progress, address issues, and maintain consistent quality of output.
Establish and refine financial processes, tools, and team targets to drive efficiency, accuracy, and accountability.
Ensure client deliverables are accurate and on time, acting as a trusted liaison between the Purpose Capital team, the CEO, and client leaders.
Proactively escalate performance or people-related concerns to the CEO and HR for resolution.
Contribute to documentation, onboarding, and process improvement by utilizing Scribe for SOPs and supporting new hire training.
Serve as the primary point of contact and assistance to the team Leads and other direct reports.
Finance Tasks & Responsibilities (50%)
Partner with school and nonprofit leadership teams, providing strategic financial expertise to support organizational decisions.
Lead financial oversight for a portfolio of charter schools and nonprofits, ensuring accurate reporting and compliance.
Develop multi-year operating budgets and financial models tailored to charter schools and nonprofits.
Prepare budget vs. actual analyses, cash flow forecasts, and other financial reports.
Create clear, value-added financial presentations to help leadership teams understand financial data and implications.
Conduct ad hoc financial analysis and respond to time-sensitive client requests.
Lead projects as requested by the CEO.
Qualifications
7+ years of progressive financial role experience in nonprofits, strongly preferred including Charter Schools.
5+ years of team leadership experience in nonprofits; Charter School experience is strongly preferred.
Demonstrated experience reporting directly to a CEO, Founder, or other senior executive and serving as a strategic partner.
Bachelor’s degree in finance, economics, business, accounting, or related field (Master’s preferred) OR equivalent elevated experience in nonprofit/charter school finance.
Advanced skills in Microsoft Excel and PowerPoint; QuickBooks proficiency required.
Expertise across finance, payroll, bookkeeping, and grant management.
Proven success in managing direct reports with ability to coach, motivate, and evaluate a team of contractors.
Strong project management and follow-up skills; experience with ClickUp or similar systems a plus.
Proficiency in reviewing/analyzing financial statements, developing budgets, and managing performance against targets.
Strong knowledge of nonprofit and charter school compliance regulations.
Excellent analytical, communication, and relationship management skills.
Ability to work independently in a remote environment, while meeting deadlines and managing multiple priorities.
